Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

KaZaA Founders Launch Skype for Linux
KaZaA Founders Launch Skype for Linux

Skype for LInux Beta 0.90 software is available for download starting today. Skype is the next phenomenon from Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, founders of KaZaA, the popular Internet software. Just like KaZaA, Skype uses P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect users to other users – not to share files this time, but to talk and chat with friends.

Skype for Linux includes the same core features as the Windows version of Skype software, including free Skype-to-Skype worldwide calling, the ability to participate in conference calling up to 5 people, Instant Messaging, and access to the Global Directory. Skype calls have excellent sound quality and are highly secure with end-to-end encryption. Best of all, Skype does not require reconfiguring your firewall or router - it just works!

Skype for Linux requires a computer running Linux with at least a 400 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 10 MB free hard drive disk space, sound card, speakers, microphone, and an Internet connection.

Skype is hype...

* Skype is proprietary.
* Skype is using a proprietary protocol that no VoIP carriers/providers will be using.
* Skype has better sound quality? Let me laugh, it just happens that Skype is only able to do audio, so all your upload can be devoted to audio.

OK, Skype is a nice toy for Windows users. For Linux users, there is GnomeMeeting (http://www.gnomemeeting.org) and Linphone.
