Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Company (PSEMC), a premier
supplier of energetic mission critical solutions, will begin another
production lot of Laser Initiated Ordnance Systems (LIOS) for the
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon system program. The
THAAD system is designed to defend U.S. and allied soldiers, military
assets, and metropolitan areas from ballistic missile attack. The PSEMC
LIOS provides the THAAD missile with an innovative solution for
electronically sequencing ordnance events using laser light technology
to initiate the explosive charges. PSEMC’s LIOS also functions to
terminate flight in the unlikely event of errant trajectory during
missile powered flight.
“LIOS supports critical THAAD missile flight events reliably and
safely,” said Scott Sypek, General Manager of California Operations at
Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Company. “When the launch command
is received, LIOS severs the missile from its launch canister, ignites
the missile’s boost motor and later separates the kill vehicle from the
spent booster. Our reliable laser initiation system has performed
flawlessly in every mission to date.”
Lockheed Martin, the THAAD prime contractor and systems integrator, also
awarded Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Company $15 million in
initial contract funding for the Thermally Initiated Venting System
(TIVS) – a safety feature that ensures missiles do not become propulsive
or present a threat to support crews in the event of a ground fire.
Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Company has been developing and
producing missile components for over 50 years, and has delivered over
100 LIOS ship-sets to date. The assembly, integration and testing of
LIOS takes place at both the PSEMC Hollister, California and Chandler,
Arizona facility.
