Global corporations often rely on voice-over-IP (VoIP) communications to collaborate across distributed offices. Sumifru Corporation, a leading provider of high quality fresh fruits throughout Asia Pacific and the Middle East, uses VoIP to connect more than 20 offices throughout the Philippines. However, the company experienced problems with call quality between its offices, which was adversely impacting productivity. Sumifru deployed Silver Peak wide area network (WAN) optimization software to cost-effectively improve call quality and significantly improve overall bandwidth utilization.
VoIP applications are highly-sensitive to WAN traffic quality. This includes and is not limited to network jitter, latency and packet loss. Silver Peak Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) software employs a variety of tools to ensure toll-grade voice quality over the WAN, including advanced quality-of-service (QoS) techniques, forward error correction, and traffic shaping. The Silver Peak VXOA software also improves jitter over congested WANs, reducing it to less than 1 millisecond (ms) on average. This enables enterprises to deliver optimal VoIP performance using Silver Peak software.
“Our business relies heavily on real-time communication between our production and sales offices in Asia Pacific, but when we extended the distance of our conferencing solution, call quality and productivity became unpredictable,” said Paul Ambas, CIO for Sumifru. “We saw immediate and tangible results in voice quality the minute our Silver Peak implementation was operational.”
Silver Peak has eliminated more than 90% of the Sumifru’s packet loss problems. In addition, Silver Peak’s QoS ensured that Sumifru’s voice traffic is prioritized to receive the appropriate amount of network resources needed for optimal performance. The company also benefits from optimized POP and SMTP traffic, where the bandwidth utilization has been improved 90%. Similarly, Silver Peak VXOA software improved bandwidth utilization for dozens of other applications by more than 30% in total.
