THURSDAY, JANUARY 10: WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE
Profile America — Thursday, January 10th. Legislation to grant women the vote was first introduced on this date in 1878, when a California senator proposed the necessary constitutional amendment. It was buried in committee for years, and defeated when finally put to a vote in 1887. But some decades later, the matter was settled rather speedily. The 19th Amendment enfranchising women was proposed in Congress in June 1919 and became law in August 1920. In the 2010 election, over 46 percent of female citizens 18 and older reported voting in the congressional election. One percent fewer of their male counterparts cast a ballot. Additionally, 66.6 percent of female citizens reported being registered to vote. Profile America is in its 16th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
