SIMI VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Hummingbird Networks has selected ADTRAN's groundbreaking Bluesocket vWLAN as the winner of its 2012 Product of The Year Award.
"ADTRAN's innovative implementation of network virtualization with vWLAN completely redefines what it means to design and implement an effective WLAN solution." said John Ciarlone, VP of Sales and Marketing.

Improvements in Control & Cost Reduction
vWLAN can replace the need for a traditional hardware controller with the use of software that controls the entire network from a central data center. Just a singular instance of vWLAN can control up to 1,500 access points and 48,000 users, which makes it powerful enough for networks of virtually any scale. By eliminating the need for hardware controllers, vWLAN gives WLAN solutions a much improved degree of flexibility and cost-effectiveness, as well as significantly decreasing the expense of network growth as more users and additional bandwidth are required.
Improvements in Network Security
In addition to the improvement in scalability, Bluesocket Access Points are equipped with on-board firewalls capable of intrusion detection and worm protection, which prevents cyber attacks from ever gaining access to any part of the network, subsequently offering a much greater level of network security over traditional WLAN solutions.
Improvements in Network Reliability
vWLAN allows the access points to separate data - such as streaming media and website content - being transmitted through the network from the control data which manages the network. In the event that there is an interruption in the network management system, the Bluesocket access points are capable of switching to a backup control instance without any perceived interruption in network connectivity. Additionally, users are able to move throughout the wireless network coverage area - even across subnets - without interruption…Ultimately making it the ideal solution for networks that cover large areas, such as college campuses and medical parks.
Improvements in Configuration
Bluesocket Access Points provide network managers with increased options in areas such as LAN prioritization and user access control. This makes it simple and convenient to manage very complex networks with varying degree of user access and importance. User control and network management does not have to be on the same LAN as the access points, making cloud control practical.
"ADTRAN is honored to receive this recognition from Hummingbird Networks. vWLAN is one of the first networking products on the market to leverage the advantages of network virtualization. With vWLAN, the enterprise is no longer bound to the limitations of a single-purpose physical device." Said Chris Koeneman, Vice President of Sales at the Bluesocket Business Group of ADTRAN.
"To simply call vWLAN an improvement in wireless networking technology hardly encompasses the degree of positive impact vWLAN makes in designing, implementing, and maintaining a WLAN solution. This product completely redefines the possibilities and potential of wireless networking, which is why it was selected as Hummingbird Networks product of the year for 2012." said John Ciarlone
