Inflammation is our body's natural response to any sort of problem or injury. A rush of blood is sent to the problem area to fight infection and repair damage, but sometimes this "inflamed" condition can end up sticking around longer than needed.
"Inflammation likes to hang around sometimes," says Dr. Smith, "and can actually start attacking healthy cells. On top of that, as we age the body just naturally becomes inflamed. Another factor is poor diet."
According to Dr. Smith, 7 out of the top 10 causes of death in America can be connected to chronic inflammation, including diabetes and cancer. Diet is the biggest contributing factor to this statistic, as Americans tend to eat a heavy proportion of processed foods, preservatives, saturated fats, and simple sugars, all of which cause inflammation.
A Mediterranean-style diet high in vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, and beans will gradually reduce chronic inflammation, but for immediate results Dr. Smith recommends dietary supplementation. Fish oil, curcumin, and an extract from an exotic tree sap called "boswellia" top his list of anti-inflammatory compounds, each of which he explains in detail and provides dosage recommendations.
