Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Gartner Identifies the Top Ten Strategic Technologies for 2010
Mobile applications on Gartner's radar next year

Gartner has identified their Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2010 and Mobile applications have finally made it onto their radar.

Fellow blogger Philippe Winthrop of Enterprise Mobility Matters brought up a good observation, that for some reason Gartner missed mobility completely last year and though they added mobile applications for 2010, he thinks they have completely missed the boat on mobility as a top 10 technology for 2010 and I have to agree with him. As part of my Technical Evangelist role at Sybase I have seen Mobile Applications becoming more important in the Enterprise for more than a few years and I would have added Mobilizing your Enterprise Systems was important last year, this year and even more imperative for 2010.

I am wondering if lasts years omission, in the 2009 list, was mainly due to the economy and that maybe mobility was not mature enough in the areas of having a killer device? We now have that device penetrating into the Enterprise and companies such as Sybase supporting the Enterprise Infrastructure, including security and management... that device is the iPhone

The Gartner report can be read here, but the 10 Strategic Technologies are...

  • Cloud Computing
  • Advanced Analytics
  • Client Computing
  • IT for Green
  • Reshaping the Data Center
  • Social Computing
  • Security – Activity Monitoring
  • Flash Memory
  • Virtualization for Availability
  • Mobile Applications

I have, over the last few weeks, been putting some thoughts into blogs and summing them up here.
