A years-long debate over a harmonized technology patenting process throughout the European Union comes to a head this week when members of the European Parliament are set to vote on it. Supported by large technology companies in Europe, opposed by open-source proponents, it represents one facet of the ongoing global debate over copyrights, patents, and intellectual property. The vote is set for July 6, and if the bill is passed, would create a uniform patenting system throughout all EU members. Proponents see it as a way to simplify a process that is now handled individually by separate member states. Companies such as Nokia and Siemens have lobbied in favor of it, with tremendous pressure, according to reports. Open-source software proponents, on the other hand, oppose the bill, because they see it favoring large companies over small. The vote will come in Strasbourg, ... (more)

"All It Took Was One E-Mail to Larry," Says Former eBay Research Director As He Moves to Google

“The main reason for me to leave is that eBay does not absorb innovation at the pace I enjoy, and its focus is narrower than Google. So rather than chewing on variations of e-commerce for the next few years, I’m very tempted to play with radically new stuff: satellites images, machine translation, ways to extract knowledge from giant bodies of data," said Louis Monier (pictured), when asked in an interview recently why he was jumping ship and leaving eBay for Google, Inc. "And frankly," Monier continued, "I’m dying to peek under the hood and see the infrastructure they have created. For someone like me, it’s the ultimate Christmas toy.” When asked, by interviewer John Battelle, whether Google recruited him, Monier answered: "I have known Larry and Sergei forever, I want to believe that I had a standing invitation. All it took was one e-... (more)

Google Ramps Up Its Mobile Reach: Launches "Mobile Web Search"

To add to last month's new Google Local service enabling people to connect to information from their mobile phones or wireless device, Google has now launched what it's calling "search in the palm of your hand." Google Mobile, says the search giant, "makes it easy to access online information — over 8 billion pages and a billion images — on your cell phone or mobile device." You can also search more than a billion images and get the one you need on your phone with Google Image Search. The technology works only with sites that use XHTML, rather than traditional HTML, to create slimmed-down mobile versions of their site specially adapted for the mobile screen. Using Google to search on your cell phone or mobile device gives you access to over 8 billion Web pages and 1.1 billion images, says Google. You enter a query into the Google search box on your cell ph... (more)

VoIP Update: Yahoo! Buys DialPad

"We still need to integrate the technology and roll out a product, and we haven't disclosed those details," Yahoo Inc company spokeswoman Joanna Stevens told the Associated Press earlier this week, as Yahoo announced its acquisition of DialPad Communications, whose VoIP technology converts conversations into data packets that can then be transmitted across the Internet using today's widely prevalent broadband connections. The 6-year old company has more than 14 million users. It is expected to serve as Yahoo's newest springboard into the world of VoIP. "As of June 14th, Dialpad and Yahoo have joined forces," reads the laconic announcement at the very top of the Dialpad web site this morning. In a Q&A at the site, the company states: "Since our inception back in 1999, Dialpad has always strived to offer low cost, high quality Internet telephony service to users around t... (more)

A Flair for Food - Health-Conscious Cooking Is This Chef's Cup Of Tea

A third-generation chef takes advantage of her alternative training to carry out her talents on a midsize sailing yacht. Strong breezes met us on our way out of the Yacht Club Marina in Antigua. Although dark clouds portside indicated rain in nearby Montserrat, our afternoon of comfortable sailing onboard the 2004, 82ft Oyster Darling was free of bad weather. A young crew with two Olympic sailors raised the sails with a thrilling thwack and steered from the double helms as drinks and light snacks were served. We skimmed across the waves, with a cool spray on our faces, headed towards a little deserted bay said to be a favorite hideaway for crew members. Once there, several guests dove off the boat and swam, while others took advantage of the snorkeling gear and explored the crystal clear waters. On the return to port, we relaxed on deck with freshly blended pina coladas... (more)

Sony PSP May Feature Porn

This just in from Tokyo - "adult" video will be released for the Sony PSP starting next month. This will be "authorized" content, too, in the sense that it will not need to take advantage of the recent hacking of the system's firmware version 1.5. The reason is that the PSP uses a Universal Media Disc,  allowing movies and video content to be played in addition to games. "We regulate the development of games with adult content by adopting our own format. But as for videos, the responsibility for content is left to the developers,'" said an unnamed Sony exec in a Japanese newspaper. Handheld games have become far more sophisticated in recent years, and are now able to deliver high-quality graphics on a par with traditional video systems. Sony, in an apparent bid to extend the PSP's popularity beyond a core, mostly young game-playing audience, included the video disc on... (more)

Kapow Helps Seiko UK, Provides SMS Text-Alert Services

Kapow, the company that gave UK its first SMS text gateway, announced a partnership with Seiko UK. Seiko UK is the watchmaker’s UK subsidiary. Seiko is using Kapow’s services to provide a SMS text-alert service that would enable fast and efficient contact with customers and Seiko’s sales teams. Seiko found that it needed Kapow’s SMS services, when it was unable to provide up-to-date customer service after doing repair or service. It was not feasible on Seiko’s part to let customers know that their job (service or repair) had been done. Seiko plans to use Kapow’s SMS database and gateway and notify its customers. Seiko would immediately notify the customer via SMS that their watch or clock is in good shape now. This ensures that the customer knows that the work has been carried out properly and they need to contact Seiko only if the... (more)

South Korea is World's Largest Phisher

South Korea, Russia, China, and Taiwan emerge as the primary hosters of global "phishing" scams, according to statistics from UK-based Netcraft. The company, which conducts Internet and Worldwide Web research and offers security services, has compiled a list of the "phishiest countries," identifying known phishing websites and comparing that number with the number of known websites hosted overall in each country. South Korea is listed as having 877 phishing sites. Almost 10% of all known phishing sites in the world are located in South Korea, according to the Netcraft statistics. Othe countries among the leaders of this dubious list include China (521), Taiwan (336), and the Russian Federation (306). Other countries with more than 100 phishing sites, according to Netcraft, include: Hong Kong (150), Romania (149), and India (124). On a percentage basis, Cameroon emerge... (more)

Best Recent Articles on Cloud Computing & Big Data Topics
As we enter a new year, it is time to look back over the past year and resolve to improve upon it. In 2014, we will see more service providers resolve to add more personalization in enterprise technology. Below are seven predictions about what will drive this trend toward personalization.
IT organizations face a growing demand for faster innovation and new applications to support emerging opportunities in social, mobile, growth markets, Big Data analytics, mergers and acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and more. This is great news because it shows that IT continues to be a key stakeholder in delivering business service innovation. However, it also means that IT must deliver new innovation despite flat budgets, while maintaining existing services that grow more complex every day.
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud computing that still exist today.
Despite the economy, cloud computing is doing well. Gartner estimates the cloud market will double by 2016 to $206 billion. The time for dabbling in the cloud is over! The 14th International Cloud Expo, co-located with 5th International Big Data Expo and 3rd International SDN Expo, to be held June 10-12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, N.Y. announces that its Call for Papers is now open. Topics include all aspects of providing or using massively scalable IT-related capabilities as a service using Internet technologies (see suggested topics below). Cloud computing helps IT cut infrastructure costs while adding new features and services to grow core businesses. Clouds can help grow margins as costs are cut back but service offerings are expanded. What do you get when you combine Big Data technologies….like Pig and Hive? A flying pig? No, you get a “Logical Data Warehouse.” In 2012, Infochimps (now CSC) leveraged its early use of stream processing, NoSQLs, and Hadoop to create a design pattern which combined real-time, ad-hoc, and batch analytics. This concept of combining the best-in-breed Big Data technologies will continue to advance across the industry until the entire legacy (and proprietary) data infrastructure stack will be replaced with a new (and open) one.
While unprecedented technological advances have been made in healthcare in areas such as genomics, digital imaging and Health Information Systems, access to this information has been not been easy for both the healthcare provider and the patient themselves. Regulatory compliance and controls, information lock-in in proprietary Electronic Health Record systems and security concerns have made it difficult to share data across health care providers.

It's a simple fact that the better sales reps understand their prospects' intentions, preferences and pain points during calls, the more business they'll close. Each day, as your prospects interact with websites and social media platforms, their behavioral data profile is expanding. It's now possible to gain unprecedented insight into prospects' content preferences, product needs and budget. We hear a lot about how valuable Big Data is to sales and marketing teams. But data itself is only valuable when it's part of a bigger story, made visible in the right context.
Cloud Expo, Inc. has announced today that Larry Carvalho has been named Tech Chair of Cloud Expo® 2014. 14th International Cloud Expo will take place on June 10-12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, New York, and 15th International Cloud Expo® will take place on November 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Everyone talks about a cloud-first or mobile-first strategy. It's the trend du jour, and for good reason as these innovative technologies have revolutionized an industry and made savvy companies a lot of money. But consider for a minute what's emerging with the Age of Context and the Internet of Things. Devices, interfaces, everyday objects are becoming endowed with computing smarts. This is creating an unprecedented focus on the Application Programming Interface (API) as developers seek to connect these devices and interfaces to create new supporting services and hybrids. I call this trend the move toward an API-first business model and strategy.
We live in a world that requires us to compete on our differential use of time and information, yet only a fraction of information workers today have access to the analytical capabilities they need to make better decisions. Now, with the advent of a new generation of embedded business intelligence (BI) platforms, cloud developers are disrupting the world of analytics. They are using these new BI platforms to inject more intelligence into the applications business people use every day. As a result, data-driven decision-making is finally on track to become the rule, not the exception.
